Measured against a RIB
Most tenders are inflatables by default, not by decision. If you are weighing a hard catamaran tender against a RIB or a traditional dinghy, three things decide it.
Stability at rest
Tenders earn their keep at zero knots. Two hulls set wide apart carry their buoyancy at the beam, so the deck stays level when a guest steps down from the swim platform with a bag in each hand. No tube to roll, no lurch. Dogs approve.
The davit math
A davit's safe working load is a budget. At 190 lbs dry, the hull spends less of it — leaving margin for the outboard, fuel, and whatever the day requires. Lighter on the crane is also lighter on chocks, deck hardware, and the crew doing the lifting.
Nothing to deflate
Tubes do honest work, and they age like tubes: chafe, patches, seam adhesive, replacement quotes. A Cape Cat is solid carbon laminate over a foam core. Rinse it, wax it once a year, and it looks the same in ten. There is no fabric on this boat waiting to retire.
